7:18 pm - Saturday this'n'that
First of all, lots of hugs and virtual chocolates to everyone who said such lovely things about me in [info]medie's meme. You guys rock and I love you all.

Second of all, Sweet Charity already has more than $8700 in bids, and there's still a week to go! See, this is why I'm not bitter or cynical about fandom, even after all these years.

Which reminds me, I forgot to mention that I'm offering up three knitted items up for auction, so you don't even have to be the top bidder to get a goodie from me -- you just need to be one of the top three.

Today was supposed to be really awesome, but ended up being lame instead. Me and [info]eowyns and [info]athenejen were supposed to go and sail on The Lady Washington, which is in San Diego this week. We had reservations and everything, and we duly showed up at the Maritime Museum, which is where the previous tallship sails I've been on have always left from. Except oops, we weren't supposed to go to the Maritime Museum, we were supposed to go to Shelter Island. Too bad nobody bothered to mention it to me when I was buying the tickets over the phone. And by that point, it was too late to get to Shelter Island before the ship sailed. A guy at the museum talked to the guys at Shelter Island, and supposedly our reservation has been moved to Monday, so [info]eowyns and I still get our fun in, but [info]athenejen can't go on Monday. Bummer.

So we hung around the museum for a while, and geeked out over the exhibits in the Star of India, and went and ate seafood, and then went over to Balboa Park because [info]eowyns wanted to see the Japanese Friendship Garden. But by the time we got there, it was almost 4:00, and the garden was closing. So we went over to the Botanical Building, and guess what? They close at 4:00 too. Apparently, everything in the world closes at 4:00, and we don't get to do anything fun today. Well, except for hang out together and eat seafood and enjoy the fresh air. Not so bad, really, but not nearly as cool as it was supposed to be.

8:34 am - Day of thanks
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who's celebrating today. May next year bring you all even more thinks to be grateful for.

I am thankful for:

My family.
My friends.
The Boy.
My cats.
Fandom.
Pretty shotgun-wielding boys in classic cars.

I am not thankful for:

Cramps. Ow.

Seriously, I have so many things to be grateful for that no list could cover it. Tons of good and interesting things have happened to me in my life, and very few bad things, and most of it has been through no particular deserts of my own, so yeah. Grateful.

I'm a guest rather than a host for the big dinner this year, so all I have to do is make a couple of side dishes. I'm also planning to make cinnamon ice cream to go with the inevitable pie. Better go get started.

6:16 pm - For your consideration: a few worthy causes
1. [info]tightropegirl has info on a campagn for fans to support the striking writers. Here's the relevant quote:

Fans began the pencil campaign, but this makes it simpler: no need to do anything but push a button. And the poor guys in the mail room don't have to go through a sea of envelopes with pencils in them; instead, when a truck is full, it'll pull up to GE or Viacom (or whichever CEO is first on the list), hopefully making a greater impact. What happens if they refuse delivery (or even if they don't)? The WGA is ready with suggestions on where to donate the pencils to teach kids to write. The point isn't that the moguls use the pencils, obviously; it's the message.

The WGA has been asking for two things from the AMPTP: Please return to the table. And please make a fair deal. They've agreed to the first one, but without the second, it will be meaningless. That's the message of the pencils: Make a fair deal. It's not going to happen unless they know people are watching.

The pencils are from a sustainable source, and anything left over from the costs will go into the Union Solidarity Fund, which was created to help non-WGA members (other unions, office assistants, etc.) affected by the strike.

The fannish universe is a scattered place these days, with a lot of isolated planets; there aren't that many central gathering spots any more. If you have a journal or blog, and you want to help, I'd ask you to treat this like a meme and put up the pencil link in your journal, along with a suggestion that other people do the same. (If you want to include an explanation of the strike, you could link to my last post, or to United Hollywood.) Potentially, this could be a historic moment; fans have gotten together to support a show, but so far as I know, there's never been a pan-fandom movement to support writers. I'm hopeful, and I'm excited, and boy do I want to see how this turns out.

If enough pencils arrive, then maybe, by the time November 26 comes around and the AMPTP sits down at the table, they'll be serious about negotiating. And everyone can go back to work.

2. afghans for Afghans is a charity that distributes hand-knitted and crocheted clothing and blankets to children in Afghanistan. They're currently collecting baby hats, socks and blankets for a hospital in Kabul. Check out the details on their website; it's a great way to put the leftover bits of yarn in your stash to good use.

3. Operation: Winchester is a campaign to send Supernatural DVD sets (along with other care package items) to U.S. soldiers overseas. Support our troops and the show, all in one fell swoop.

7:08 am - A few SPN recs
Boys'n'Berry Jam by [info]caffienekitty. John and the boys and several jars of homemade jam. On the road in the Impala. As totally adorable as it sounds.

Paper Weight. by [info]vaznetti. Henricksen recruits Kathleen Hudak to help hunt down the Winchesters, but the more she looks at their files, the more things don't add up. Kathleen is my all-time favorite SPN guest star, and I'm always happy to see her in fic. This is a wonderful portrayal of her character, with a strong and intelligent voice. Henricksen and other canon characters come through really well, too.

Man, Woman, Dog by [info]pwcorgigirl. A quiet, bittersweet, cautiously hopeful portrait of Bobby and Ellen's friendship after the events of AHBL.

You Would Cry Too, If It Happened To You by [info]superbadgirl. Sam and Dean get hit by the worst curse ever. There's no way I can say more about this story without spoiling it, but you really, really need to read it. Oh, and it has awesome (and exasperated) Bobby, too.

Laissez-Faire by [info]minkmix. Bobby totally underestimates the Winchester work ethic. Cute and funny, with great Bobby voice and a great portrait of the boys from his POV.

9:53 am - Semagic help needed
So I'm trying to configure Semagic to cross-post here and on LJ, but when I went to their Server Settings page, it didn't have insanejournal listed as an option. I typed it in manually, and it seemed to log in but gave me an error message about "malformed login response," and when I tried to post it complained about "invalid user name." Has anyone else had this problem?

Some of Us Really Do Watch for the Plot: a Collection of Supernatural Essays. Lot's of essays about the show by lots of smart people, and also by me.

8:23 am - In light of recent events
I have a permanent account on LJ, so I'm unlikely to go anywhere unless they make me (which is unlikely, since I'm disgustingly vanilla), but I do want to remind you guys that I have a backup journal at http://marinarusalka.insanejournal.com/ . There isn't any content there right now, but from now on, I'll be double-posting all fannish content (fic, meta, recs, etc.) over there.

9:33 pm - Words. Words. Words.
Gah. Over 3200 words into this [info]reel_spn story, and I still haven't finished the prologue. I am made of fail. Very long-winded fail.

And tonight's progress consisted mainly of taking out 500 words, because the scene had totally gone off in the wrong direction and needed to be restarted from scratch. Bleh. This is not a promising start, dammit.

12:13 pm - Paying forward from <lj user
Pay It Forward meme: I will send a handmade* gift to the first five people who leave a comment requesting to join this PIF exchange. I don't know what that gift will be yet, but you will receive it within 365 days. The only thing you have to do in return is "pay it forward" by making a similar agreement on your journal.

*The "gift" you send doesn't have to be handmade. It can be fic, icons, whatever.

I think the original meme said three people, and many participants are being ambitious and going for ten, but I think five is as many as I can realistically do in a year. If you sign up, pick any number of three or more people to pay it forward to.

9:00 pm - Man, I love the internet.
So there's this site called imcooked.com which is sort of like YouTube for foodies. Instead of posting recipes, people post amateur videos of themselves preparing dishes. Pretty cool in itself, huh?

A couple of days ago, Christopher Walken posted a video of himself making roast chicken with pears.

It looks pretty tasty, actually. I can totally see myself making that recipe. Also, his cat is very cute.
